NOW AVAILABLE IN WESTFIELD GALLERY - Mile Square - Hoboken Series
Ricardo Roig was born in 1983 in New York City and raised in Westfield, NJ. Ricardo accessed his formal training at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland during which he took advantage of a study abroad program in Florence, Italy. At this time his parents separated and stopped financing his education. Roig needed to transfer to a more affordable school so he moved back to New Jersey and settled in Hoboken to work at the Elysian Cafe to fund his education. Roig graduated Cum Laude, earned his BFA in Studio Art, and also received an Art Teacher Certification K-12 from Kean University.
For the next three years, Roig supported himself solely through his artwork and began to make a name for himself as a local artist in Hoboken, NJ. He held independent art exhibits, donated work to raise money for local charities, created commissioned works, painted public murals, was featured in many local periodicals, and exhibited in venues like Lana Santorelli Gallery, Barsky Gallery and Tresorie.
The Hoboken Historical Museum offered Ricardo a great opportunity for a solo show of his innovative new Mile Square Series of limited edition hand cut screen prints in 2012. The opening was celebrated with nearly 300 visitors and allowed Roig to sell out of many of his editions of prints. The Museum also purchased 10 of his works for their permanent collection.
Ricardos art has been supported locally in Westfield and Hoboken, NJ, but has also traveled with his many collectors to their homes in Germany, Baltimore, Boston, Mexico, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Spain, London, Connecticut, San Francisco, and New York City. Two staff memebers of Christie's Auction House in New York City have purchased Roig's work and he is also a published artist as his art was selected for H-Mag?s April/May 2014 issue. Empire Realty, Coldwell Banker and many other realtors have also valued Roig's work by purchasing his hand cut screen prints.
Today, Roig maintains a large studio space in Hoboken where he obsessively paints whatever inspires him. His muses change, his style becomes more developed through his practice, and he takes breaks from painting to also concentrate on his hand cut screen prints. Roig supports himself through his art and as an elementary art teacher in New Jersey's public schools.
Roig is professionally represented in Union County, NJ by Evalyn Dunn Gallery in Westfield and represents himself in his resident city of Hoboken, NJ through his studio. He aspires to gain representation in Hudson, NY, New York City and Boston within the next two years.
Ricardo's art is energetic, vibrant, evocative, full of personality, abundant of poetic temperament and rich in original style. Roig celebrates life through his art and hopes to communicate this to his viewer.
